Tottenham thwarts Atlético Madrid’s interest in the market and makes Cristian Romero’s renewal official

Tottenham Hotspur have officially renewed Cristian “Cuti” Romero’s contract, ending speculation about a possible transfer to Atlético Madrid. The Argentine defender, one of Spurs’ most important players, has extended his stay until June 2029, according to reports in the European press.

Atlético Madrid’s pursuit falls short

Romero, 27, had been heavily linked with a move this summer, with Atlético Madrid identifying him as a priority signing. However, Tottenham moved quickly to secure his future, announcing the extension on Monday (18) via their social media channels.

The defender joined the London side in 2021 and has since established himself as a leader at the back. Across five seasons, Romero has made 126 appearances, scoring eight goals—the latest coming in the European Super Cup final. He was also named Player of the Tournament and Man of the Match in last season’s Europa League triumph.

Tottenham’s transfer window investments

This renewal comes during an active summer for Spurs in the transfer market. The club has invested €140.6 million (around R$890.4m), with Mohammed Kudus being the headline signing from West Ham for €63.8m.

Other arrivals include Mathys Tel, Kevin Danso, Vuskovic, Kota Takai, and João Palhinha—the latter joining on loan from Bayern Munich with a €30m purchase option.

Strong start to the Premier League season

Tottenham kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 3-0 win over Burnley, newly promoted to the top flight. Brazilian striker Richarlison was the standout, scoring twice, including a spectacular volley.

Next, Thomas Frank’s side face a tough challenge against Manchester City on Saturday (23), at the Etihad Stadium, in the second round of the Premier League. The last time Spurs visited, they stunned City with a 4-0 victory.
