PSG vs Tottenham: Luis Enrique was approached to manage Spurs, but his manner prevented a deal

As Paris Saint-Germain prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur in Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup final at the Blunergy Stadium, a twist in recent football history has emerged: Spurs once considered appointing PSG boss Luis Enrique as their manager but opted against it due to concerns over his personality.

According to The Athletic, Tottenham’s board explored hiring Enrique in 2023 after sacking Antonio Conte. The Spaniard was out of work following his departure from the Spanish national team and was seen as an attractive candidate. However, his “reputation for irritating people” reportedly raised red flags within the club hierarchy, leading them to abandon the idea before making a formal offer.

Interest from Other Premier League Clubs

At the same time, Arsenal and Chelsea also held talks with the coach. Arsenal’s pursuit was halted by financial considerations, while Chelsea ultimately backed away, leaving Enrique open to offers from abroad.

PSG Appointment and Success

In July 2023, Enrique accepted PSG’s proposal, quickly delivering silverware. His most notable achievement came last season when he guided the club to a Champions League title, defeating Inter Milan in the final.

Now, Enrique has the chance to lift another major trophy against the very club that passed on him. The UEFA Super Cup final kicks off on August 13 at 4 p.m. (Brasília time), with PSG at full strength except for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is set to leave the club.

Following the final, PSG open their Ligue 1 campaign against Nantes on August 17, while Tottenham host Burnley in their Premier League debut on August 16.
