Maresca sees Chelsea closer to Liverpool, Arsenal and City in the fight for the Premier League

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca believes his side are closer than ever to competing with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City for the Premier League crown. After securing the Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last season, the Italian says the Blues are ready to close the gap on England’s top clubs.
From “very far away” to “very close”
Speaking to the Men in Blazers YouTube channel, Maresca admitted Chelsea were “very far away” from the league’s dominant teams a year ago. Now, however, he insists they are “very close” and fully focused on bridging the final gap.
Chelsea finished second last season but suffered a slump after the start of 2024, only sealing Champions League qualification in the final round. Maresca believes that run-in helped boost confidence and strengthen the squad’s winning mentality.
Depth, tactics and transfers driving progress
The coach credits the improvement to greater squad depth, tactical refinements and smart signings. Since BlueCo’s ownership began, Chelsea have endured inconsistent seasons, but Maresca says the current project is underpinned by better long-term planning
He stressed the need for consistency over an entire campaign, warning against repeats of last season’s mid-year dip. “Maintaining a high level throughout the season will be key to challenging rivals who are used to being at the top,” he said.
Early test against Crystal Palace
Chelsea open their Premier League campaign against Community Shield holders Crystal Palace, a fixture Maresca sees as an early gauge of their title credentials. The manager wants his side to start strong and keep their place near the top from the outset.
Maresca’s ultimate goal is clear: turn preseason optimism into sustained performance and restore Chelsea to the summit of English football.
