Pep Guardiola is eyeing Castello Lukeba to bolster Manchester City’s defense

RB Leipzig’s 22-year-old centre-back emerges as a prime target amid summer squad reshuffle
Manchester City have opened talks to sign RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, as Pep Guardiola looks to reinforce his backline ahead of the new Premier League season.
The French centre-back, 22, has impressed in the Bundesliga since arriving from Lyon in 2023 as a direct replacement for Joško Gvardiol who, in turn, made the switch from Leipzig to City. Now, Lukeba could be set to follow the same path.
City’s Defensive Refresh Underway
The move comes as part of Guardiola’s plan to refresh his defensive options, with uncertainty surrounding the futures of some senior players. Manuel Akanji has been linked with a possible exit, while John Stones continues to battle injury concerns.
In addition, City have sanctioned the loan of Vitor Reis to Girona for the season, creating room for new talent in the squad. Lukeba, known for his anticipation, ball-playing ability, and composure under pressure, fits the club’s recent recruitment profile of signing young, high-potential defenders.
RB Leipzig’s Stance
According to journalist Rudy Galetti, initial contact has already been made between City and Leipzig. However, negotiations are expected to be challenging, as the German club are known for driving a hard bargain especially for emerging players still under long-term contracts.
With Guardiola keen to finalise his squad early in the transfer window, the coming weeks could prove decisive. Should a deal be reached, Lukeba would join a growing list of Bundesliga talents making the leap to the Etihad Stadium.
