Real Madrid names Trent Alexander-Arnold as Toni Kroos’ successor on set pieces

Arda Güler also emerges as a contender for dead-ball duties under Xabi Alonso
Trent Alexander-Arnold will be Real Madrid’s primary set-piece taker for the 2025–26 season, taking over from club legend Toni Kroos, according to reports from Defensa Central.
The former Liverpool right-back is expected to handle corners, direct free kicks, and indirect set pieces, marking a new chapter in Los Blancos’ post-Kroos era.
From Anfield to the Bernabéu
Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid this summer and is already being entrusted with high responsibility under new manager Xabi Alonso. Known for his elite ball-striking ability and creative vision, the Englishman already showcased his set-piece prowess with an assist during the Club World Cup campaign.
With Kroos retiring and Luka Modrić transitioning into a lesser role, Alexander-Arnold has quickly stepped up to become the team’s primary orchestrator on dead-ball situations.
Arda Güler also in contention
Despite the confidence placed in Alexander-Arnold, Arda Güler remains a strong candidate for set-piece duties. The 19-year-old Turkish midfielder impressed during the Copa del Rey and Club World Cup last season and is considered a favorite of coach Xabi Alonso.
Güler’s accuracy and composure on the ball make him a likely alternative for specific situations or when Alexander-Arnold is rested.
Real Madrid preseason and season debut
The squad is set to return to training at Valdebebas on August 4, focusing on tactical preparation and fitness ahead of the new LaLiga campaign.
Real Madrid will kick off their season on Tuesday, August 19, when they host Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. (Brasília time).
