Fabrizio Romano confirms Real Madrid’s interest in Rodri and reveals the outcome of the deal

Real Madrid remains strongly interested in signing Manchester City star Rodri, with the push reportedly coming directly from incoming manager Xabi Alonso. However, according to trusted journalist Fabrizio Romano, a deal is unlikely to materialize during the current transfer window.

Rodri, recently crowned the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, has long been admired by the Madrid board. Interest cooled slightly following a major injury but reignited after Alonso who sees Rodri as a midfield anchor in the mold of his own playing style was confirmed as Real Madrid’s next head coach.

Romano confirmed the club’s admiration for Rodri on his YouTube channel, stating that while Real Madrid is serious about signing the 29-year-old, a summer 2025 or 2026 move is more realistic. For now, Rodri is expected to remain with Manchester City, where he is under contract until June 2027.

Long-Term Strategy from Madrid

Florentino Pérez and the Madrid board are reportedly preparing for a future midfield reshuffle following the departure of Toni Kroos and the potential retirement of Luka Modrić. Rodri is viewed as the ideal replacement—Spanish, technically gifted, and capable of leading from midfield.

While Rodri has expressed openness to returning to Spain at some point, his €110 million valuation (approximately R$707.8 million) and key role under Pep Guardiola make a transfer this summer virtually impossible. However, his price is expected to decrease in 2026 when he enters the final year of his deal and turns 30.

Complicating Factor: Atlético Madrid Ties

A potential twist in the saga is Rodri’s past connection with Atlético Madrid, Real’s city rival. The midfielder spent the 2018/19 season at Atleti after rising through their youth ranks. While not a transfer dealbreaker, his history with Los Rojiblancos could stir controversy among fans and pundits.

Rodri’s Recent Comeback

Rodri returned to action late last season after a 236-day absence due to a ligament injury, featuring in the Club World Cup and closing the season with eight appearances and one assist. Despite the long layoff, Real Madrid remains convinced of his long-term value.

With Rodri now fully fit and central to City’s plans, Real Madrid appears willing to wait—betting on time, contract dynamics, and the player’s personal ambition to eventually bring him back to Spain.
