Manchester City agree deal for goalkeeper James Trafford amid Ederson exit rumours

Young English goalkeeper returns to City as Brazilian star edges closer to departure
Manchester City have reached a deal to re-sign goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley in a move that may signal the imminent departure of long-time number one Ederson. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League champions will pay around €40 million for the 22-year-old.
Trafford Returns as Potential Successor
James Trafford, who came through City’s youth academy, never featured for the club’s senior side during his initial spell. However, after gaining experience with Bolton and Burnley where he made 73 appearances he is now being brought back as a potential long-term replacement for Ederson.
Trafford had also attracted interest from Newcastle United, but has already communicated his decision to join Pep Guardiola’s squad ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Ederson Nearing the Exit Door
With Trafford’s arrival, speculation intensifies around the future of Ederson, the 31-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper who has been a pillar of City’s recent dominance. Despite previously being linked with clubs from Saudi Arabia, Galatasaray have emerged as the most serious contender for his signature.
Inside the club, there’s growing belief that Ederson’s cycle at Manchester City is coming to a natural close. Having won every major title with the club, including the Champions League and multiple Premier League trophies, his departure would mark the end of a historic era.
Grealish Could Follow Ederson Out
In addition to Ederson, another major name linked with an exit is Jack Grealish. Reports suggest Napoli are showing strong interest in the English winger, with Manchester City even open to helping cover part of his salary to facilitate a move.
Grealish, who arrived at City in 2021 for a British-record transfer fee, has struggled for consistency. A move to Serie A could provide him with a fresh start and regular playing time as the Italian side looks to rebuild its squad.
A Summer of Transition for City
Manchester City have already made several moves in the summer transfer market, including signings for the Club World Cup. The acquisition of Trafford marks a strategic shift as the club begins planning for a post-Ederson era.
As Guardiola reshapes his squad, more high-profile changes are expected, with a mix of youth integration and experienced exits defining the coming season at the Etihad Stadium.
