Álvaro Rodríguez leaves Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid due to high competition within the team

Young Uruguayan striker decides to leave due to growing competition from Mbappé, Endrick, and Gonzalo García
After returning from a loan spell at Getafe, 20-year-old striker Álvaro Rodríguez has officially confirmed that he will be leaving Real Madrid. Despite his strong emotional connection to the club, the young forward admits that the path to consistent first-team football in Madrid has become too crowded.
“I’m 20 years old, and I think I need to leave Real Madrid,” Álvaro said in an interview with Post United.
“I can’t wait any longer for the first team. My dream is to play for Real, but I need to leave first.”
Struggles Amid Fierce Competition
Rodríguez spent last season on loan at Getafe, where he scored three goals in limited minutes. His return to the Santiago Bernabéu was seen as an opportunity for a fresh start, but the arrival of Kylian Mbappé, the emergence of Endrick, and the rapid rise of Gonzalo García have blocked his path.
Despite being once viewed as a promising future starter especially after scoring a memorable goal in the Madrid derby against Atlético Álvaro has since fallen down the pecking order.
Real Madrid’s Packed Attack
New head coach Xabi Alonso has a wealth of attacking options for the upcoming season:
- Kylian Mbappé, the marquee signing.
- Endrick, the Brazilian sensation.
- Gonzalo García, the Castilla standout who impressed at the Club World Cup and has reportedly moved ahead of Endrick in Alonso’s plans.
With so much depth and talent, Álvaro believes the time has come to forge his own path elsewhere, potentially returning in the future as a more complete player.
More Departures on the Horizon
Rodríguez’s exit may not be the only one. Real Madrid are also expected to part ways with Ferland Mendy, who has struggled with injuries and now faces competition from Pablo Carreras and Fran García.
According to club sources, either Mendy or Fran García will be sold, with the board hoping to raise at least €20 million from one of the deals.
A Tough but Mature Decision
Though Álvaro Rodríguez leaves with disappointment, he also departs with perspective.
“I’ll continue on my path with the goal of returning,” he said.
“My dream is to succeed at Real Madrid but that journey has to start elsewhere.”
As Real Madrid continues reshaping its roster with elite young talent, Rodríguez’s exit is a reminder of how even bright prospects must often take the long road to reach the top.
