Two-time World Champion with the USA announces retirement after suffering from injuries

Injury-plagued final years mark the end of a legendary career in U.S. Soccer
Tobin Heath, one of the most iconic players in the history of U.S. women’s football, has officially announced her retirement at age 37. A two-time FIFA World Cup winner and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Heath steps away from the game after battling injuries that kept her sidelined for much of the past few years.
The announcement was made on her own RE-CAP Show podcast, where Heath reflected on the emotional decision and her illustrious career.
“I think I still had a few more mountains to climb with football, although I’m very grateful for the career I’ve had,” she said.
“I always get asked, ‘So, are you coming back?’ and it’s like, ‘Well, the forecast is coming.’”
A decorated career with the U.S. Women’s National Team
Heath earned 181 caps for the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) and was named U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year in 2016. Her influence extended far beyond her statistics—she was admired for her creative flair, vision, and technical mastery, often compared to street-style footballers for her close control and composure under pressure.
She was part of the dominant USWNT squads that captured:
- 2015 & 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cups
- 2008 & 2012 Olympic gold medals
- NWSL titles with Portland Thorns FC
- Final years and farewell to the pitch
Heath’s final professional stint came with OL Reign, but her time was cut short by a serious left knee injury, which required surgery in September 2022. She never fully recovered to return to competitive football, a source of disappointment for fans who hoped to see her back on the pitch.
Despite stepping away from the spotlight, Heath emphasized that her motivation was never fame.
“I never played to be famous or for people to care about me,” she said.
“I simply played because I loved it.”
The end of an era
Tobin Heath retires as one of the most respected and beloved figures in U.S. Soccer history. Her career will be remembered not only for its trophies and accolades, but for her passion, artistry, and authentic love for the game.
